Shaler Township is located in Allegheny County, about 6 miles north of the city of Pittsburgh. Shaler Township primarily covers the zip codes and areas of Glenshaw (15116) and includes parts of Allison Park (15101), and Pittsburgh (15223 & 15209). It covers approximately 11.2 square miles and has a population of about 29,000. Shaler is serviced by a full time Police Department, Emergency Medical Service and six Volunteer Fire Companies. Shaler is bordered by Hampton, Indiana and O’Hara Townships, Sharpsburg, Etna, Millvale, Reserve and Ross Townships.
Shaler Township was established in 1847 and named after Charles Shaler, a mid-19th century judge and president t of the local 5th District Court of Pittsburgh. The creation of the Glenshaw Glass plant in the late 19th century sped up settlement somewhat bringing workers to settle in the area. Shaler was among the first suburban areas to develop outside of the city of Pittsburgh and today it remains a primarily residential municipality.
Shaler Township enjoys easy access to the many employment and cultural activates of downtown Pittsburgh. In addition, the Shaler North Hills Public Library is conveniently located on Mt. Royal Blvd. right next to the Middle School. There are numerous Parks and Fields for recreational activities, the largest being Fall Run Park in Glenshaw that encompasses close to 94 acres. Here you will find a mile long nature trail which leads you to one of the park’s major attractions—the waterfall. There is also a playground, soccer field and basketball court.

Shaler Township is served by the Shaler Area School District. It is made up of 5 Primary Schools (grades K – 3); an Elementary School on Scott Avenue (grades 4 – 6), a Middle School on Mt.
